GESOLAR Cyprus Ltd, a renewable energy installer trading since 2011 from a Latsia base, has introduced an updated design and specification methodology for new residential photovoltaic installations, formalising a change in approach following the six-month operational history of the country's move from net metering to net billing on 1 January 2026.
The revised methodology, which takes effect on all new residential quotations from 1 August 2026, incorporates a battery-storage analysis stage into every initial site visit, reflecting the changed economics of surplus solar generation under net billing rules. Where the previous net metering arrangement credited exported electricity at retail rates against a household's bill, net billing pays the wholesale rate for exported units, which typically sits well below the retail purchase rate.
Under the updated approach, every residential survey now models a household's daytime and evening electricity draw separately, calculates the volume of self-consumed versus exported solar generation under likely usage patterns, and presents two comparison quotes: one for a photovoltaic array on its own and one for the same array paired with a suitably sized battery. The methodology also flags where household appliances, water heaters, or planned electric vehicle charging can be time-shifted to align with daytime generation, reducing the volume of surplus power exported at wholesale rates.
"Net billing has been in force for six months, and the pattern of what households actually save under the new arrangement is now clear enough to build into every quotation from the survey stage," said Eleni Stavrinidou, director of GESOLAR Cyprus Ltd. "The old net metering-based specification effectively treated the grid as an unlimited battery paying retail. That assumption is no longer accurate. Householders considering a photovoltaic system this year deserve a specification that reflects how the numbers actually work under the current rules, not the ones that ended in December."
The change applies to residential quotations only. Commercial installations, which are typically sized to daytime consumption profiles that already align with solar generation windows, have historically depended less heavily on the export credit and see a smaller effect from the tariff change.
The company has also updated its post-installation monitoring protocol to include a six-month review call for new residential customers, at which typical daily and evening usage patterns are compared with modelled expectations; where the actual usage differs materially from the survey model, whether through changed occupancy, appliance additions, or new EV charging load, the review provides an occasion to reconsider battery specification or reconfigure time-of-use scheduling.
GESOLAR holds certification to ISO 9001 for quality management, ISO 14001 for environmental practice, and ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety. The revised residential methodology has been documented under the company's ISO 9001 procedures and is subject to the same annual external audit as the rest of the quality management framework.
Cypriot household electricity prices have ranked among the higher tariffs in the European Union in recent years, according to Eurostat data. That underlying tariff level continues to underpin the payback case for on-site generation even as the export rate paid under net billing has fallen relative to the retail credit available under the earlier scheme. The revised methodology aims to make that arithmetic transparent at the survey stage rather than leaving households to reconstruct it after installation.
GESOLAR employs fifteen staff, including engineers, electricians, and specialised technicians, all directly employed. Residential surveys under the updated methodology will continue to be carried out by the same in-house team responsible for installation and commissioning, avoiding a handover between separate sales and technical functions.
Beyond photovoltaic systems, the company also fits energy storage batteries, electric vehicle chargers, heat pumps, underfloor heating, and electric radiators from its Latsia workshop. The battery-storage element of the revised solar methodology draws on the company's existing storage installation experience, which predates the net billing transition by several years and covers a range of lithium chemistries and hybrid inverter platforms.
The updated methodology will apply across the whole service area, which extends within a 100-kilometre radius of the Latsia workshop and covers Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol, and the government-controlled area of Famagusta district. Materials explaining the change, including a written summary of the modelling approach used at the survey stage, will be provided to every new residential enquirer at the point of first contact.
