Eric Litvin's Luma Optics Targets Per-Link Power Waste in Scaling GPU Clusters
Sebastopol, United States - October 9, 2026 / Luma Optics /
SEBASTOPOL, Calif. — As AI GPU clusters grow, the optical links that tie them together are becoming a line item in power and cooling budgets. Luma Optics, the optical interconnect company led by Co-Founder and President Eric Litvin, designs transceivers that draw roughly 30% less power per unit, and sets them up for the data center they run in rather than a generic profile.
Small savings per link, multiplied across a fabric
Every accelerator in a GPU fabric connects through optical links, and the number of links rises with the size of the cluster. Each transceiver draws a modest amount of power on its own; across a large build, those draws add up, and every watt drawn is also a watt that has to be cooled. Lowering power per unit lowers that total on every link in the fabric.
Luma Optics builds transceivers at 100G, 400G and 800G, including 800G optical transceivers engineered for NVIDIA GB200 GPU fabric — the tier where data rates, link counts and power density are highest.
Tuned to the facility, not a lab average
No two data centers are built or run the same way. Luma Optics uses optimization pods tuned for specific data center environments, together with ML-powered diagnostics, so its transceivers are configured for the facility they operate in. The company pairs this with a patent-pending robotic calibration platform and reports a field failure rate under 0.01%.
Two decades in optical networking
Eric Litvin has spent more than 20 years building optical networking products for hyperscale data centers and AI compute clusters, and co-founded Luma Optics in 2004. The company is headquartered in Sebastopol, California, with operations in the Netherlands.
