Dragonfly Medical and Behavioral Health is responding to Tennessee's statewide ban on kratom and 7-OH products by expanding access to medication-assisted care for residents who have lost their legal supply and now face withdrawal symptoms. The ban took effect July 1, 2026, under Matthew Davenport's Law, formally known as HB1649 and Public Chapter 950.
Gov. Bill Lee signed the measure on May 7, 2026. Knowing possession of kratom or 7-OH is now a Class A misdemeanor, and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has stated it intends to enforce the law actively. The change has drawn renewed attention as law enforcement agencies across the state warn consumers and retailers about the newly prohibited products.
For many residents who used kratom daily, the ban has ended their legal supply overnight. Stopping kratom after regular use produces a withdrawal syndrome that closely resembles opioid withdrawal, and buprenorphine is clinically effective for managing it. Dragonfly Medical & Behavioral Health, a Joint Commission-accredited clinic in downtown Johnson City, already lists kratom abuse among the conditions it treats and provides buprenorphine-based care for affected patients.
"Many people who relied on kratom every day are now discovering that abrupt discontinuation feels much like opioid withdrawal, and that experience can be frightening and dangerous," said a representative for Dragonfly Medical and Behavioral Health. "The goal is to meet those individuals where they are, provide evidence-based medical support, and remove the barriers that keep people from seeking help."
The clinic offers kratom addiction treatment that combines medication-assisted treatment with individual counseling, group support sessions and certified peer recovery services. Patients may choose in-person appointments or telehealth visits. Current federal telehealth rules support access to buprenorphine, with a final rule permitting up to a six-month supply to be prescribed without an in-person exam when safeguards are met.
The clinic accepts insurance and TennCare, and its admissions team works with patients to identify suitable payment options. Integrated primary care also allows patients to manage chronic medical conditions alongside recovery.
As a Johnson City outpatient rehab, Dragonfly provides flexible therapeutic and medical care without requiring an overnight hospital or inpatient stay. The center treats opioid and alcohol use disorders alongside co-occurring mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Medical providers, counselors, nurses and peer recovery specialists coordinate care to address both physical and behavioral health needs.
"Integrated care allows patients to manage addiction and mental health challenges at the same time, which supports stability and long-term recovery," the representative added. "Affordable self-pay options, insurance acceptance and broad TennCare coverage help reduce the financial barriers that often stand between people and treatment."
