Camp Social, a women's-only retreat set in the Pennsylvania Poconos, is responding to a growing cultural shift as more adults seek nostalgic, screen-free experiences to form genuine friendships and rebuild real-world social connections.

Researchers and social commentators have increasingly documented the difficulty many adults face when trying to make new friends. As careers, relationships, and daily routines fill available hours, the unstructured settings that once made friendship easy in childhood and college often disappear. Camp Social positions itself as a response to that challenge, offering a structured yet playful environment where connection happens naturally.

The appeal of the adult summer camp format lies in its combination of nostalgia and intention. Shared activities, group settings, and time away from everyday responsibilities remove many of the barriers that make adult friendship feel awkward or effortful. At Camp Social, participants take part in archery, hikes, arts and crafts, tie-dye, pickleball, morning yoga, and lakeside gatherings, all of which create opportunities for spontaneous conversation and shared memory.

"The settings that used to bring people together simply are not part of adult life anymore. When you put people in cabins, hand them a friendship bracelet kit, and take away the pressure of everyday routines, connection happens on its own."

The camp reports that the desire for new friendships does not fade with age. Participants range from their twenties through their seventies, with women in their forties, fifties, and sixties forming a meaningful part of the community. Camp Social notes that roughly 99 percent of campers arrive alone, underscoring the demand for social experiences that welcome solo attendees rather than assuming guests come with an existing group.

"People assume friendship building is only for the young, but the need continues through every stage of life," Schreiber added. "A woman in her sixties and a woman in her twenties often bond over the same campfire. That mix is part of what makes the experience meaningful."

The three-day, all-inclusive sleepaway experience takes place at a working camp facility and includes private cabin lodging, chef-prepared meals, wellness programming, and evening activities such as themed parties, campfires, and live music. Camp Social emphasizes that the experience is not a fitness program, weight-loss retreat, or coaching intensive, but a vacation centered on play, presence, and community.

Located in Equinunk, Pennsylvania, the camp is accessible from New York, Philadelphia, Washington, and much of the East Coast, with round-trip bus transportation available from New York City. Weekends for the 2027 season are planned for early June and late August, priced at 999 dollars for the all-inclusive experience. Tickets are scheduled to become available on September 27, 2026.
