Wentzville has grown faster since 2010 than any other Missouri city with 20,000 or more residents, adding about 70% to its population in 15 years, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures. America's Fence & Deck, a Warrenton fence company that counts the city among its busiest markets, reports that many of the city's new homeowners call for a fence for the same reason: the dog.

The city had a population of 29,070 in the 2010 census and an estimated 49,495 in July 2025. Its population has risen every year since 2010, including a gain of 956 in the most recent year. The growth has brought new construction. The Census Bureau's Building Permits Survey shows the city authorized 1,754 new single-family homes from 2020 through 2025, close to 300 a year, with a peak of 383 in 2021.

The growth doesn't stop at the city limits. St. Charles County, which includes the city, added 21,233 residents over the same five years, more than any other Missouri county. Net migration, the number of people moving in minus those moving out, accounted for 18,926 of them, or nearly 90%.

Nick Johnson, the company's owner, has built fences across the St. Louis Westplex for about 30 years. The Westplex is the suburban corridor along Interstate 70 on the western edge of the metro area, including Warrenton, Wentzville, O'Fallon, Lake St. Louis and St. Peters.

Johnson says his typical customer is a dog owner who has just bought a house in a growing suburb. He calls Wentzville the fastest-growing part of the company's service area, where the company expanded in 2020 by buying Wentzville Fence. The company has also built fencing for several dog rescues in the area.

Nick Johnson, owner of America's Fence & Deck, put the pattern plainly: "If you don't have a dog, a kid or a bad neighbor, you're not calling me. Out in the new subdivisions it's the dog almost every time. The first thing I tell those folks is to get the HOA paperwork moving before they fall in love with a fence style, because the association gets a say before anybody digs a hole."

Families with children are the next most common callers, a group Johnson said grew during and after the pandemic. Whatever the reason for the call, buyers in a new subdivision often need two approvals before a fence can go in.

The first comes from the homeowners association, which in many subdivisions must sign off on a fence before any work begins. The second is a permit, which the city requires for all new fencing. City code also regulates where a fence goes, how tall it stands and what it is made of. The city's published fence guidelines direct permit questions and applications to its Building Division.

America's Fence & Deck guides homeowners through both steps. The company supplies the paperwork and information each application calls for, and the homeowner files it. Missouri does not license fence contractors at the state level, so the company holds licenses with individual municipalities and is registered with St. Charles County.
